Present simple uses
1) Facts or permanent situations
- Cows eat grass (it is a fact)
- Cows are eating grass
- Water freezes at 0°C (Zero at zero degree centigrade)
- Peter works in an office ( here we want to know where Peter work permanently (ˈpɜːʳmənəntli)
2) Things that happens regularly, repeatedly or all the time
- I play football every week
- we can't say I am playing football every week (it's wrong; a big mistake in English)
- Do you go to church every Sunday?
- My father washes his car once a month
These two uses are probably 95 per cent of the time that we use the present simple
3) Demonstrations, series of events, commentary
- I double-click on the text to high it and then I click on the delete-button
- First I take a bowl and pour a cup of milk into it, next I break two eggs in a bowl
- Gerrard passes to Suarez runs with the ball and passes back to Gerard who shoots and scores
- We use the present simple in commentary because is quicker
- The action is very quick. So we don't use the present continuous
4)Exception:temporary situations
Therefore, they are a few verbs which are never(or very rarely)used in the continuous form.They are only used in the simple form:
